In summary; Gina Carano is an established American Actress. Back In 2018, she was cast into a massive role in the show called Star Wars: The Mandalorian. This was Disney's first live-action Star Wars television show. She portrayed the character Cara Dune which was an ex-shocktrooper. There was a huge amount of hype around Gina's appearance in the show when she appeared in the 4th episode of the show. Immediately becoming a fan favorite amoungst Star Wars fans.
During the time Gina was playing this loved role, the world was sadly struck with the COVID-19 pandemic. Gina as always took to her Twitter followers to encourage conversation with thought provoking social media posts about a range of topics. It is worth noting that her co-stars on The Mandalorian were also doing exactly the same thing, as you'll shortly see.
First of all, let's take a look at some of the social media posts that Gina posted, and the message behind them; not the message behind them that the mainstream media ran with. Continue reading to learn more about Gina's story and where issues began to start.
The first real visible problem in Gina's time working with Lucasfilm arrived when a group of online bullies demanded that Gina put pronouns into her Twitter biography. Pronouns for those that don't know, are for example. Gina 'she/her' it determines what gender you identify as. Gina spoke to her co-star Pedro Pascal which assisted her in understanding the usage of pronouns, Gina however, still did not wish to do this. This she was fully entitled not to do, instead she decided to use 'BEEP-BOP-BOOP' which referenced RD-D2 found within the Star Wars saga and BOOPED fans in little fun social media posts that were interacting with her. Gina later revealed in an interview with Ben Shapiro that she was asked to attend a Zoom meeting with 45 members of the LGBTQIA+ community with Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy. Gina stated she felt this action was abusive; she offered to take and pay for a few of the members to go out for dinner for her in Los Angeles. Lucasfilm said no to Gina's generous request.
It's important to note. Gina has a wonderful fan community from all backgrounds, many of which interact through the GinaCarano.net fan platform.
Gina often questioned the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 social media posts on Twitter; a lot of people said she was spreading inaccurate information. All she was doing was sharing her opinion. On one occasion she promoted to fellow fans and followers to adjust their bra's if they needed a face mask created by doing a bit of DIY. By doing this fans got involved and converted their bra's into face masks.
Gina often wrote posts such as these during the COVID-19 pandemic in which she encouraged individuals around the world to work. This type of social media content did mean that Gina was being harrassed by a section of the Star Wars fan community. No action was visibly taken in preventing Gina getting harrassed by Star Wars/Lucasfilm.
In this Twitter post (now X) on October 1st 2020 Gina clearly stated that the COVID-19 vaccine isn't for everyone. She clearly was saying It's a choice within this tweet; some of the media continue say she is anti-vax. Once again after this social media post there was an outrage from various Twitter accounts.
On the 10th of February 2021 Gina shared this quote to the 'Fleet' section of Twitter. (Gina did not write the content of this post) she shared it. This social media post undeniabely was the final straw for Disney, but why? Let's take a look at It's context. As referenced by the
Auschwitz Museum hate against minority groups started by turning neighbours on each other; this enabled rounding up minorities easier for the Nazi's. This was the context that Gina shared the fleet, she was not comparing being a jew to being a republican in the slightest. This is the narrative that the mainstream media ran with; this was this not factual or accurate.
Following this post #FireGinaCarano began trending on social media. A huge amount of this hashtag trend were bots, rather than actual fans calling for Carano's firing from the Star Wars universe.
It's important to see some of the online posts that were directed towards Gina. These included sexual abuse natured posts, death threats and general harrassment. It appeared that nobody from Star Wars/Lucasfilm attempted to sqash any of this malicious abuse. (Credit @DataRacer117)
During the 2020 Disney Investor Day. Kathleen Kennedy, President Of Lucasfilm announced that a new show was being developed by Jon Favreau. Fans speculated that Gina would be the main star of this series. Gina lated confirmed that this was true. The announcement generated a huge amount of hype of excitement from Star Wars fans. On Feb 10th 2021 a Lucasfilm rep announced in a media statement that Gina was no longer working at Lucasfilm. Gina was not told personally. Gina's project in which she had be lined up to do was later scrapped. Her action figures were discontinued from production leaving fans scrambling to find the last of the Cara Dune merchandise.
Gina's LA home was then surrounded by stalkers and paparazzi.
