Kick-off start time: 10 am ET.
Only three teams in the English top flight have won three straight games 5-0. Could Liverpool repeat against Brighton, immortalizing themselves alongside Aston Villa (1899), Chelsea (2010) and Manchester City (2017)? It might be an even tougher ask to net five at Anfield against Graham Potter’s side than it was against Watford or even Manchester United.
Brighton have conceded just nine goals in nine games this season, though they have also only scored that many. Potter admits that he is not entirely certain how to stop the “out of this world” Mohamed Salah, even if he does he knows there will be plenty of other players who could beat his Seagulls side. Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp has a center back dilemma, but it is infinitely more welcome than the ones he had last season. Joel Matip looked to have established himself as the first choice partner to Virgil van Dijk — and his preplanned withdrawal against Preston in the EFL Cup suggests he is in the plans to face Brighton — but summer signing Ibrahima Konate made an impressive fist of his task against Manchester United. Then there is Joe Gomez, yet to fully establish himself since returning from injury.
The picture is not quite as rosy in midfield where Fabinho and James Milner are expected to miss out. Thiago may be given further time to work on his fitness, but his return to first team training is welcome news for Klopp as is the fact that Paul Pogba’s horror challenge on Naby Keita only resulted in knee bruising for the Liverpool midfielder.
Brighton: They may have taken four points from Liverpool in the Premier League last season, including a win on Merseyside, but Potter believes that his side will face a far greater test now that Anfield is packed to the rafters with home supporters. “Anything is possible of course, but it is the most challenging footballing environment there is. Anfield with a crowd is a completely different animal, I would suggest, than what it is without,” said the Brighton boss.
“You need everything pretty much to go your way if you want to try to get a result at Anfield. You have to be perfect yourselves, you have to be together, you have to be resilient and play at such a high level and then you have to hope that they have a bit of an off day as well. Because while we are in the same league, we are not at the same level as them.”
Potter is right. Good though Brighton are they simply do not have the quality to match Liverpool. Few teams do. PICK: Liverpool 2, Brighton 0
